This is beyond creepy.

And exactly who are they praising? Wow! I’m speechless…

  2. Ford Prefect Says:

It’s disturbing how people can take a man and try and raise him up as some sort of savior. Obama is just a man, really no better or worse than any of the rest of us. Even though I feel secure that he will not win in November, can you imagine the dissapointment that these people are going to experience if he wins and he turns out to be just another man, even the best president this country could ever produce could not live up to this hype. The sad part is if and when that happens it won’t be the famous people in this video that will be the dissapointed ones, it will be the poor and helpless that have been led to believe that he will turn there lives around and make everything perfect for them. It’s sad how far our politics have led us from the the reality of life.

Taken only on the merits of songwriting, it’s not doing much for me. Is it irony when the same groups who have made political hay carping about the godless irreligiousness of American celebrities while using their churches as political vehicles say “ur doin it rong” to this effort?

This might be a stupid question, but is Dave Stewart even a US citizen? He remarried and lives in the US, but I don’t think he’s naturalized.

  4. Slartibartfast Says:

Al I know is if I were one of Obama’s advisors, I woudn’t be happy about this at all.

The video is produced so poorly (or well, however you wish to look at it), it appears that the celebrities are praying TO Obama (may His Name be ever revered). Using the trappings of P&W (which are familiar to at least 80% of modern church-going people) is patently stupid.

It’s stuff like this that makes it ever harder to refute the “Obama is the antichrist” email forwards.

McCain is very astutely running not against Obama, but his supporters. I smell 1972 all over again this year.

  5. bridgett Says:

See, I’m a modern church-goer and I must be in that 20% that has no idea of what this refers to artistically, other than it looked to me like a b/w pop music video in the vein of Will.i.am’s work earlier in the campaign. So there’s an entire “watered-down pop for God” genre of video that this is like? (My church is not a “show videos and play geetars” sort of outfit, obvs.) Can you point me to some P & W videos on Youtube so I can see what you’re reacting to?

  6. Watchman Says:

What are people with that level of um…devotion going to do if Obama somehow loses?

  7. bridgett Says:

Alternately, what will people who sincerely believe he’s the anti-Christ do if he wins? I mean those comparatively small number who have convinced themselves that this is IT, as opposed to the far greater number who are cynically using the Apocalypse as a metaphorical political slogan, like those on the left who carelessly sling around Hitler’s name or call people fascists and thus impoverish their argument by foolish overstatement.

  8. nm Says:

I’m not a Christian, so I’ll have to take y’all’s word for it that this video is using praise and worship tropes (to me, it looks like a soft-focus campaign video of no particular significance, with music that is too slow, with the idea that Obama can fix a lot of problems). Since you see it that way, I’m sure you’re right. But how, substantially, is it different from the sort of iconography linking Bush and Jesus that Southern Beale was showcasing on her blog a few days ago?
    http://sobeale.blogspot.com/2008/08/you-say-messiah-like-its-bad-thing.html

I ask that not in a snarky way: I get it that you feel that there’s a difference, and I’m curious about what it is.

  9. Watchman Says:

I haven’t seen anybody who takes the Obama as Antichrist thing seriously (everybody knows it’s Hillary anyhow) except for some Obama defenders trying to use that line to defuse one of McCain’s attack ads. For the “Left Behind” types who would presumably be the target market for that, it won’t work…they believe the Antchrist is going to be a Jew, so that lets Obama out. Is there really anybody seriously saying that you could point me to? Cause I’d love to see what color the sky is in their world.

  10. Southern Beale Says:

Yeah what this song really needs is a chorus of “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever” or “Open The Eyes Of My Heart.” I never get tired of that! /sarcasm

There’s a couple of versions of the e-mails floating around. Here’s one:
    _____
Subject: Fw: The Book of Revelations!

A Trivia question in Sunday School:

How long is the beast allowed to have authority in Revelations? Guess the Answer? Revelations Chapter 13 tells us it is 42 months, and you know what that is.

Almost a four-year term to a Presidency. All I can say is Lord Have Mercy on us.!!!!!!

According to The Book of Revelations the anti-Christ is: The anti-Christ will be a man, in his 40’s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal….the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything ..

Is it OBAMA?? I STRONGLY URGE each one of you to repost this as many times as you can!

Each opportunity that you have to send it to a friend or media outlet…do it! I refuse to take a chance on this unknown candidate who came out of nowhere.

    ____

That’s an easy one to dismiss, as it’s just Scripturally incorrect. However, I have family members (end-timer, last stand, Hal Lindsay folks) who have been totally persuaded that Obama is a diabolical figure. They get juice from videos from McCain’s advisors that present Obama as the Anti-Christ (and since we started the discussion with visual analysis, we might as well go there again):
